We look at them for fashion inspiration, dating advice, diet tips and beauty secrets. Another place of celebrity life we look to for inspiration is the 9-months situation…

Being pregnant in Hollywood is just as common as being in a movie with Jennifer Aniston - it will happen to you some time in the next couple of months (unless you’re a man). Seeing these belly-baring babes strutting their stuff in Los Angeles can be a very good learning school of how TO and how NOT to dress while pregnant. Here are some of the best and worst pregnancy moments in tinseltown.

Pregnancy can cause porridge brain and porridge wardrobe…

I love Isla Fisher and I especially loved her in Wedding Crashers and Confessions of a Shopaholic. But this floral jumpsuit is doing nothing for her baby bump. Jumpsuits are tricky and can only be worn by those who flaunt beautiful waists – otherwise you will look like a square. So if you are pregnant, stay away from jumpsuits.

When musician M.I.A appeared at the Grammy Awards in 2009 wearing this wacko outfit I immediately blamed her pregnancy hormones! What sober thinking woman would wear such a thing? Don’t dress up your bump like it’s some sort of circus act… keep it classy!

I am all for showing off your legs during pregnancy, but Tori is showing them off a little too much. This dress (or top in the real world) is too short… she should’ve added leggings or skinny jeans.

The mother of all mothers… Angelina Jolie is usually the epitome of style and elegance during pregnancy. But when she donned this choir robe when she was pregnant with her twins she failed pregnant women everywhere! It’s shapeless, big and overwhelming. When you are pregnant it is so important to create a silhouette – this silhouette is nowhere to be seen!

The beauty of pregnancy fashion…

Gwen Stefani. This rock and roll mom is a style superstar – with or without a baby bump. She goes for soft a-line dresses, leggings and flowy tops, gorgeous denim and cool harem trousers. She sticks to her style but gives it a slight tweak to make space for the burgeoning belly.

Nicole Richie. This boho fashionista knows what looks good on her pregnant body. Yes she’s petite but there’s a lot we can learn from the way she puts looks together when she’s preggy. A-line shapes are amazing for pregnant bodies, as well as narrow jeans and loose tops. Remember to streamline your silhouette with a fitted cardigan, jacket or coat – this will ensure your look has definition. When she was pregnant with her son she designed a range for Pea in a Pod and this is what she had to say about fashion and being pregnant, “You really feel like you have to change your whole wardrobe. And that's the last thing a woman wants to go through. So I really tried to make this line to get women excited about wearing clothes.”

Angelina Jolie. Sure she got it wrong with that big taupe tent… but this A-list star usually gets it right when she’s pregnant. Her favourite pregnant fashion statement is the maxi dress. She sported these flattering and trendy dresses often during her first and second pregnancies. They are comfortable, have the all-important a-line shape and the fabric is usually lightweight and cool.

The most important thing to remember is to keep true to your style. Don’t change who you are or what you love to wear just because you have a growing belly. There are some amazing pregnancy ranges available at all the local retailers like Truworths, Woolworths and Edgars. And one last tip… invest in a good pair of preggy jeans, they will become your lifesaver during pregnancy and for the first couple of weeks after your bundle has arrived.
