One of the lies of modern life is that enjoyment lies in the results. To understand my statement I would like to point out that in everything that we experience in life, comes two fold. First there is the attempt to achieve and then there is the achievement itself. From early, we as human beings, have been taught about the achievement of the human race and how it has benefited us. We were taught that you need to achieve a certain amount of marks before you are acceptable to pass a test. All these achievement or results focus became part of our character. Therefore, we are ever in a race to achieve more and more. In short, we call it the rat race. The hidden lie in this is that if we achieve the result we will find joy in life.

Is that true? Maybe to a certain degree. Studies have found that to move from low income to middle income does add some joy to your life, but from there on the progress or enjoyment is little or even degrading. This begs the question where do we find the joy in life?

Lets observe the simple things in life. Those little things we enjoy. The things we do when hiding in your own cave and not wanting to be disturbed. There is the enjoyment of a good meal, the enjoyment of a good book or movie, the enjoyment of a good night’s rest or even a lazy Sunday afternoon. What do all these actions have in common? The one and most important thing for all of these actions it is not about the results. It is not about finishing the good meal, but in eating it. It is not about finishing the book or movie, but to read or watch it. It is not about waking up again, but enjoying the sleep. It is all about the doing, the path to the results. There is another large example for us parents, and that is raising kids. The joy is in raising them not to produce an adult to leave the home. In matter of fact, that is the results we sometimes fear. Another example is those who do their passion. For them the joy is in doing whatever it is they do, not necessarily what they produce. If we think about it, we have no control over the results, we can only control the doing.
