Description
Monkeyland is the worlds first free roaming multi-specie primate sanctuary. Monkeyland has as one of its aims, to create awareness about the plight of primates and to show that with a greater understanding of our primate cousins, that we can all live in harmony.
Monkeyland presently affords 15 different species of Primates a home with 9 of the 15 species free roaming in the main 12 hectare Monkeyland forest while another 3 species free roam in our forested “Special monkey home” and the remaining 3 species call Birds of Eden their home.
The 9 species of primates that you will be able to see at Monkeyland include 3 Lemur species like the Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata) and the Ringtail Lemur (Lemur catta) as well as the Black lemur (Eulemur macaco). Fortunately the illegal lemur trade in South Africa is relatively low and there are luckily very few illegal lemurs being kept as pets. Due to their status of endangerment (all lemurs are classified as endangered or critically endangered) it is very difficult to just go out and purchase a lemur because you think it’s cool.
