Founded in 2007, with a campus in Plumstead and another in Diep River, Cape Town, OAKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL is an independent, co-educational school specialising in supporting learners with specific learning difficulties. Catering to those who would otherwise struggle to realise their full potential in a mainstream environment, OAKLEY HOUSE SCHOOL supports students with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, speech and language delays, motor difficulties, sensory difficulties, anxiety, organisational challenges, etc. Our aim is to provide a complete education whilst enabling learners to develop self-confidence, independence, a sense of responsibility and academic competence across the curriculum.

At OAKLEY HOUSE PREPARATORY SCHOOL, our priority is to restore confidence and to develop a positive attitude to learning by providing specialised teaching within an atmosphere of support and understanding for each learner’s specific needs. Some of our learners do not have any challenges other than needing a small, supportive environment in which to learn.

Our curriculum is aligned to the National CAPS curriculum, but we believe that what sets us apart from other schools is the manner in which we teach, with an emphasis on multisensory teaching, and the individualised support which we provide. Although our maximum class size from Grade 1 - Grade 6 is ten, our children are placed into even smaller like-ability groups for Mathematics and Literacy Hour work every day in order to target areas for development in these two core skill sets.

Our multi-disciplinary team, which includes Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, an Educational Psychologist, and an Autism Spectrum specialist, works alongside our remedially qualified teachers to develop an Individual Education Plan for each child. In addition to our intense remedial focus, we also believe passionately in the development of the whole child, so our children enjoy lessons in Physical Education, Art, Drama, Music and Computers as part of their school week. They also participate in a full extra-mural programme which includes activities such as Modern and Hip-Hop dancing, Steel Band, Experi-Buddies, Arts and Crafts and Baking, and there are clubs for Lego, Computers, and Drama. We also offer a variety of sporting activities including a Sports Club, Soccer, Cricket, Karate and Playball.

At OAKLEY HOUSE HIGH SCHOOL, we believe that a successful and happy education hinges on collaboration between students, teachers and parents. While academic achievement in Grades 7 – 12 is an important goal necessary for the integration of students into the next phase of life, we also believe that it is not the sole measure of success and so we place emphasis on achieving one’s best, not only in academics, but in all spheres of involvement. Oakley House strives to grow students into independent young adults by providing selective, judicious support which allows each student to grow and move towards independence at their own pace.

Our High School is one of few schools offering supported education up to Grade 12. We provide small classes (maximum of 12 in Grade 7, and 15 otherwise) with learning made accessible to individuals, differentiated learning according to the CAPS curriculum, and blended learning through the implementation of iPad technology. We offer supervised homework classes, supplementary lessons in core subjects, and an extra-mural program tailored to our learners’ interests and our small-school character.

Special needs education means different things to different people. At OAKLEY HOUSE HIGH SCHOOL, our belief is that the window of remediation, addressed in our Preparatory school, is past, and so in the High School our approach is perhaps best seen as one of ‘just enough support’. We do this to necessarily prepare our young men and women for the life of independence that awaits them just over the horizon.

OAKLEY HOUSE HIGH SCHOOL is proud to announce our 100% matric pass rate, with three subject As - in Life Sciences, Tourism and CAT - and our results above the WCED averages in most subjects. Congratulations to our Matrics of 2017!

Over the past ten years, Oakley House School has become a leading independent school specialising in teaching and supporting children and adolescents with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD). As an extension of the services we offer, and in response to the need for specialist training in Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), we have opened OAKLEY HOUSE TRAINING AND SUPPORT CENTRE.

The aim of OAKLEY HOUSE TRAINING AND SUPPORT CENTRE is to share our in-depth knowledge, experience and expertise by providing a comprehensive programme of courses for teachers, student teachers, teaching assistants, facilitators and other professionals working within the field of Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD).

• OAKLEY HOUSE TRAINING AND SUPPORT CENTRE will run a SAQA accredited course (NQF Level 5, 10 credits) on 5, 6 and 7 April 2018. The course is also accredited by SACE and carries 15 CPTD points. The course is suitable for education, training and development practitioners and is entitled: Develop inclusive learning programmes that enable participation of learners experiencing barriers to learning and development.
• OAKLEY HOUSE TRAINING AND SUPPORT CENTRE also offers FACILITATOR training and the next course is scheduled for 12 – 15 March 2018. This course is recommended for people with some experience in the field of education, as well as for students and parents interested in working in inclusive educational settings. It offers training in management techniques specifically focusing on the role of the facilitator, specific learning difficulties, classroom strategies and practical experience in the classroom. The course is accredited by SACE and carries 15 CPTD points.
