Description
Parklands College provides an all round education at the highest level. The approach to education is modern and in line with the DoE requirements in the Foundation, Intermediate, GET and FET phases. Staff members have extensive experience as examiners, markers and moderators. We endeavour to ensure that the choice of subjects offered is as wide as possible, providing for the needs of each learner. It is this breadth and variety, along with an opportunity to pursue subjects of choice, which encourages our students to become ‘life-long’ learners, seeing knowledge as intrinsically worthwhile. We have based our approach to the curriculum around a group of core life skills such as literacy, numeracy, coping with the world of work, adaptability, skills, leadership and Information and Communication Technology. Our approach to learning is innovative, enriched and flexible, with the emphasis on success. Achievement, in all areas of learning, is recognised and rewarded with merits. Learning, however, is not just about gaining certificates; it is a preparation for life
“As our little learners embark on their journey through education, Christopher Robin Pre-Primary provides an environment that enables the learner to develop lasting impressions that will enhance their positive attitude to life-long learning. The classrooms are alive with the excited chatter of the children as they develop their skills and expand their minds. Their days are filled with creativity, music, discussion and play while exploring the how’s and why’s of space, road safety, seasons, stranger danger and much, much more!

Our weekly themes are highlighted with shows, outings and guest speakers. In addition to our fun-filled days, each little person is enriched with drama, information technology, violin, recorder, international languages, dance and sport.
On entry into formal education, our free-thinking, confident and independent little people are assured success.”
- Lee-Ann Steynberg, Principal
Learners are enrolled for pre-primary on condition that they are socially and emotionally ready to adapt happily into a learning environment and are not younger than 3 years of age.
Our pre-primary was established in 1980 and is a progressive and dynamic place of learning. As learning should always be fun, the learners are, in a relaxed and happy way, encouraged to experiment with a wide variety of educational and creative equipment, which includes indoor and outdoor experiences, as well as the discovery of computers, books and the freedom of fantasy play. Our teachers are specialists in the field of early education and guide the children, bearing in mind that each child is unique and develops at his own pace, through the carefully planned programme which provides experiences that enrich and enhance each child’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive and creative development, thereby providing a sound foundation. Xhosa, Recorder and Information Technology are introduced during the pre-primary years as part of the daily activities. The child’s development is continuously evaluated and each child who is joining Grade 1 is screened to ensure school readiness. We aim to develop and educate the child holistically, therefore, the school offers many activities to support and enrich this development, so that each learner may become an individual, able to easily integrate into the formal system. Should a learning challenge be identified, a comprehensive referral is made to the relevant therapist. Early intervention and therapy is initiated in an attempt to overcome challenges, before the learner enters the College. Progress Reports are provided on a regular basis and parents are encouraged to join the teacher for a personal interview.

Parklands College Preparatory (Grade 1 – 6)
‘Transforming the classroom from a one way system of information dissemination to a village approach of information gathering and sharing is critical to empowering pupils. It requires pupils to generate ideas, take ownership of their learning, respect the opinions of others, learn to act responsibly and believe that they can make a difference in their own lives and the lives of others.’
- ‘Transforming Power’ by Seth Kreisberg
Parklands College Preparatory Faculty
In the Preparatory Faculty, we pride ourselves on furnishing every aspect of the development of the learners in our care. We believe in nurturing the growth of our staff and learners thereby making education a team effort to which all are committed. The atmosphere that exists within our school is one in which learning is interactive and dynamic. There is the establishment of a critical, creative consciousness whereby children learn to rely on their own independent validation strategies to make informed choices and value judgements.
At Parklands College, we believe that effective teaching involves passion, knowledge, skill, discipline, motivation and care. Our educators foster high expectations of the learners and rigorously continue to promote the culture of excellence that pervades the very essence of our school. A healthy balance exists between the different spheres in our school, whereby the emphasis is placed on achievement on an individual and a collective level. This is achieved by the growth of self-esteem and the realisation of each individual’s potential. Our educational vision is one in which the holistic education of the individual goes beyond academic excellence. We believe that innovative approaches and pioneering methods along with the acquisition of certain fundemental skills are necessary for the success of a school thereby ensuring that Parklands College continues to remain a forerunner in educational innovation.

“What greater gift can a parent give to a child than the benefit of a quality education? Here, within a community of caring, professional educators, each learner’s needs are nurtured. Encouragement to give of their best is promoted in all aspects of learning in order to ensure success and personal fulfilment. Our examination process and continuous assessment, ensures a sound foundation for further studies.
We offer a balanced timetable which ensures that every learner has the opportunity to participate in the sport and cultural programmes on offer. Therefore, learners are required to participate in campus life by committing to a cultural or sporting code, thereby enriching their education. The world requires citizens who are comfortable within a rapidly changing environment and to this end, the acquisition of technology skills is a top priority.”
