Cheryl Fisher (Nee Bennie)
MSc (OT) Wits, BSc (OT) Wits

I am an occupational therapist who qualified at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2002. Since qualifying I have gained a broad spectrum of experience working with children in both the public and private sector in South Africa and internationally. I have been running my own practice in South Africa since 2007 and have worked with a number of highly experienced therapists.

I have achieved a master’s degree in occupational therapy, from the University of the Witwatersrand, specialising in sensory integration and child development. My practice runs from two locations, the Norwood Sports Medicine and Exercise Institute and The Key School which is in Parktown and is a school catering for the needs of autistic children. In addition to my private practice I spent 7 years working for Wits University as a clinical tutor supervising third and final year students. I also work alongside the therapists at Summit College in Dainfern on a part time basis.

I have an interest in assessing and treating children who present with many difficulties ranging from concentration problems and ADHD to Autism and severe physical disabilities who require therapy and/or assistance with their specialised seating and mobility needs.

Occupational therapy with children is about helping children to achieve their full potential and allowing children with disabilities, no matter how minor or severe, to access their learning environment. I work with children from birth until approximately 13 years of age and therapy is made fun through age appropriate and challenging activities that meet the child’s particular interests.

My therapy happens on a one to one basis and parents are welcome to sit in on therapy sessions to be involved in the process. This is however dependant on the child’s preferences and ability to concentrate with mom or dad in the room. School and home visits, including meeting with teachers or other professionals, are often arranged to augment the child’s therapy.

Therapy may address, but is not limited to, the following:

– Sensory Integration Disorder
– Early Childhood Development Intervention
– Autistic Spectrum Disorder
– Cerebral Palsy and other Physical Disabilities
– Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder (ADD, ADHD)
– Learning Difficulties
– Developmental Co-ordination Disorder
– Gross and Fine motor Skill Difficulties
