The KwaZulu-Natal Society for the Blind seeks to enhance the quality of life of people who are blind or partially sighted; their families and where possible, people with other disabilities.
The KwaZulu-Natal Society for the Blind provides blind and partially sighted people with skills training, employment, education, accommodation and recreation through the provision of habilitation services, the operation of business units and the development of economic independence.
Early intervention is critical to the successful rehabilitation of blind and partially sighted children. The KZN Society for the Blind’s Durban-based ECD unit was established in 1988 to address the specific needs of visually impaired pre-school children. Since its inception, Baumann House ECD unit has provided a springboard to formal education to more than 200 children. The annual in-take of children is limited to 12 by the capacity of the facility.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a general classification that refers to the processes by which children from ages birth to 9 develop socially, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and morally.
Our Andree Wildman Educational Center offers a one-year residential course in basic literacy, numeracy and life skills. The Centre was opened in 1996. Since its inception, the program has been the springboard to education for 120 visually impaired – some multi disabled - children, from rural areas who have had little or no previous education. In most cases the bridging education ensures entry into formal or vocational schools that would otherwise be reluctant to accept these unschooled children. On average 10 children pass through the program annually.
Skills training includes basic Braille/print literacy, numeracy, self-care activities, environmental knowledge, gardening and vocational skills.
For many children, this facility acts as a springboard into formal schooling – more than half of the children who have attended the course have been placed in schools. For others, our centre provides the only education these children will ever receive and it is our task to prepare them for future independence and employment.
