At Montessori Africa Baby School we base most of our care and teachings on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. Montessori emphasized the child’s indiscriminate absorbent mind as an important tool with which the child self-constructs. The child is dependent on his environment in constructing his personality. He is also on a quest for total independence. Dr. Montessori identified certain sensitive periods in the child’s life where he is preoccupied with certain aspects of his environment to the exclusion of all else. For instance, in the sensitive period for order the child is more concerned with his sense of routine and order rather than in, for instance, the need for change and variety, which we as adults might favour. A sensitive period is transient and usually occurs in the first six years of the child’s life as can be seen below.

Our committed Directresses guide the children in their care to flourish, both as autonomous beings, creating their unique individuality, and also as citizens of the world and our society this is a case of the microcosm (the classroom) reflecting the macrocosm (the world and society). It is imperative, in these formative years, that we give the child the best we can, in every possible way.
All our Directresses are evaluated quarterly and are required to attend advancement courses and workshops, thus ensuring their continuous growth and improvement.

Montessori Africa Junior Preparatory believes in the whole development of the child. We follow the inspirational and pragmatic teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori.
Not only do we strive to address the intellectual development of the child, but also the physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of the child. It is also our aim to keep abreast with all current research into the child’s psyche as well as track the latest research on every level of the child’s development. We strive to accommodate the child’s development in order to produce a healthy and balanced adult, while balance on every conceivable level is encouraged. It is believed that knowledge is power. Each child’s individuality is respected and thereby a learning environment is created to cater for the various needs of each child. Simultaneously we create a happy, positive learning environment, which is in keeping with international educational standards.
The class sizes will range from 15 children to 20 children of ages varying between 6 to 9 years. Dr. Montessori recommended vertical grouping as an effective method of getting the children to help one another and to integrate socially. Vertical grouping creates a positive learning environment, which reflects the society that we live in, that is, helping one another and being able to explore our strengths and weaknesses.
We will concentrate on learning methods and techniques while integrating “mind mapping” and various learning styles. The “brain gym” methods will be used in order to facilitate learning and in order to get both hemispheres of the brain to integrate. The seven intelligences of the child are recognized and so a learning style, suited to each child, is created.
